Beatrice Atkinson Obituary

On Friday, February 6th, 2026, Beatrice Atkinson of St. Marks, MB passed away at the age of 92 years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lorne, children - Callie, John and Anne; granddaughter Desiree, sisters - Eleanor, Norma and brother Romeo; and special friend George.

She will lovingly be remembered by her daughters: Holly (Dave) Asham and Desiree Swindle, her grandchildren Brendon (Nichole), Adam, Allan (Ashley), Jasmine (Chris), James, Alexander, Kate, and Jesse; 16 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; her sister Myra, her Aunt Therese, and numerous extended family.

Bea was born in Portage la Prairie on December 14th, 1933 to Alfred and Ludovine Klyne and baptized Aurora Beatrice Marie Klyne. She was the 2nd oldest of five children. In 1955 she married Lorne Atkinson and also had a family of five. Most of her married life was spent on the family ranch in St. Marks. She worked hard alongside her mother-in-law, her husband and their children. When asking family members what they remember about her their first response was her great cooking and hayfield lunches. Particularly how she folded the wax paper around the sandwiches to keep them fresh and newspaper to keep the soups hot. Next was the large family feasts and delicate desserts she created.

Beatrice held a variety of jobs throughout her life; her favorite was working as a cook in a hunting Lodge. She loved to dance, play cards, do crosswords and build puzzles. Playing slots was also something she really enjoyed. When her vision started to go, she loved to watch Westerns and do Word Finds. She was a proud Metis woman and supported the MMF since its inception. Most people found her graceful, classy and humorous. She had a great many friends and acquaintances.

In October of 2008 she had a really rough time health wise. She had a lumpectomy, cataract surgery, both kinds of scopes with consequences, a heart attack, by-pass surgery and a stroke. This affected her memory and many family and friends were not remembered. Around this time, she met her dear friend George and they were together until his passing. At this time, she was happy to move in with her daughter Holly and her husband, Dave. The highlights now were visits to town for lunch and a play at the machines as well as visits from homecare.
